Ubisense Story Life Science Automation

The reseARCh carried out by the University of Rostock at the CELISCA lab is a laboratory assistance solution to demonstrate the benefits of Web Service enabled, wireless sensor networks (WSN), for process monitoring and disaster management in laboratories. The experiment extends an already existing system in the Life Science Automation (LSA) domain.

The domain of Life Science Automation consist of highly specialised solutions. The current available integrated sensors/tags are wired and have fixed positions making it highly inflexible and challenging in a laboratory environment. Using wireless sensors nodes instead eradicates this problem and the solution to localize these sensors is found in Ubisense technology. The capability to provide location based services in industrial automation environment is a beneficial feature and results in high-quality information delivery bundled with specific data about the location of the captured sensor.

Experiment
Recent technological advances enabled the development of small wireless devices known as, Wireless Sensor Nodes. These devices consist of sensors, gathering data such as temperature or light, a microcontroller, processing the data, and a radio interface to communicate with other Wireless Sensor Nodes. These devices have been developed to be able to measure levels of carbon monoxide and hydrogen (two very dangerous gases) so the device-to-device communication method has to be very safe in such environments and Ubisense satisfies this criteria.

Wireless Sensor Nodes are an automated and autonomous solution for process observation and disaster management. The integration of WSN’s is very user friendly and can be implemented by a non-technical member of staff. The user initiates a new experiment and creates the needed observation task for the process monitoring via the Lab Assistant. A list of the available observation offerings will be presented for the user to pick from. The location assignment for the Wireless Sensor Nodes will be achieved through the use of a Ubisense tag.

The tag is placed near the WSN and the tag signals will be picked up by the Ubisense sensors which are mounted onto walls. The three major applications are; room based monitoring-observation of environmental parameters independent of the experimental setups. Device based monitoring-directly attached to observe a single instance of laboratory appliance, e.g. incubators. Process based monitoring-observes the process flow of a single experimental setup. The WSN’s are attached directly onto an experimental probe and pass through all experimental Stages observing specific changes.
